Monday, July 21

Greetings from the DR and Haiti!  Today, the group headed to the bank to exchange our dollars for pesos and then we were off to market, where we drank fresh coconut water!  Mondays and Fridays are market days here and the market was very busy and alive with people selling all kinds of things:  fresh produce, seeds, grains, eggs, fresh foods, and clothing.  There was even a snack that kind of looked like hot dogs...think a piece of sausage sandwiched in between two plantains.  I did not get to try any of the market food, but Barbara was adventurous and ate an empanada.  She reported it was delicious.

After the market, we headed to Sadana forest to work on cleaning up and reviving a flower bed project in the school next door.  A shade structure had been in place, but came down due to a hurricane or other storm.  We mostly clean up the fallen structure today and made plans for what additional things we need to buy for the new project.  We broke for lunch at 12:30 pm and ate vegan black bean stew.  If you like Cuban rice and beans, this meal was would have been for you!

After lunch, we spent part of the afternoon with a group of 7 to 10 year olds at the school where we worked in the morning.  We made bead bracelets and they colored in coloring books for a few hours.  I felt like a rock star because I was holding the beads and might have well have been passing out gold!  The kids were very friendly and happy to have us there.  Some of them spoke Spanish, as well as Creole, and I was able to communicate with them.  It was fun asking them how to say things in Creole, but I am having a hard time remembering what they said.  I felt like I was helping with Kids with Purpose, but the class just happened to be located in Haiti!
